Our presenter this month is Shirley A. Apley, Senior Librarian for
Genealogy, History, and Archives at the Fort Worth Public Library. Ms
Shirley comes from South Dakota and has worked for the Fort Worth
Library for over 14 years. She has a Bachelors of Science in History
from the University of South Dakota and a Masters in Library Science
from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas. Shirley has been
involved in genealogy research since she was eighteen years old. She
has taught “Advanced Genealogy” classes at Tarrant County College.
Ms Shirley will discuss the Genealogy program at the Fort Worth Public
Library, which is the third largest in Texas. Formerly focusing on
the 13 founding colonies, the southern states and Texas it has now expanded
to cover all 50 states and the territories. Vital information is
stored on microfilm, microfiche, CDROM, databases, newspaper clippings,
photographs, etc. The archives also buy unique items such as the
Texas Convict Records Ledgers and Index which covers 1849-1970.
Our program this month: From 1914 to 1917 one woman kept the
community of Fort Worth captivated with her many escapes from the
city and county jails. We will follow Bessie Williams through her different
techniques of escape and life in general. All this was going on
while the local Woman’s Club was sponsoring a campaign for a new
county jail.
Come learn about genealogy and have a little fun learning about
local history at the same time!
